We have all had to live in small spaces for one reason or another. Sometimes buy or rent a place not realizing just how little the rooms actually are. Other time we are forced to live in tiny spaced due to our situation at the time. Whatever the reason we have all taken to the internet a time or two looking for decoration ideas on how to make the space appear larger (that’s probably how you ended up here).
Before we get into how to make a space look bigger you should first read this article on storage ideas for a small space. In this article, I address how to save on space when there just isn’t any in your home. The first step to making a room look bigger is to hide some of those items.
Once you have cleared out your space there are so many different decoration ideas that will instantly make your place feel bigger. Below are my top five that I guarantee when done right will have you feeling as if you widen your rooms some how.
Light Paint Colors
Not many people know that if you paint a room a dark color it immediately feels smaller. Even if the color is just a slightly darker hue it can have a dramatic effect on how closed in the room feels. If you are reading this article I will assume this is the opposite effect you are going for.
Instead opt-in for light colors such a whites and bright blues, or even a dusty gray. These colors are neutral enough that you can style the room with whatever colors you like (maybe that darker blue you originally wanted for the walls) and it not all feel out of place. Dusty grays are also very trendy at the moment. This option could be a good choice for future sale efforts.
Bright colors are key to making your space look larger than it actually is. These colors can be any color your heart desires as long as the shade pops. This is also a good time to express yourself through the room. If you chose a neutral color for the walls then a bright yellow, or even pink, won’t look out of place in your throw pillows.
Also, remember that not all of your accent colors have to bright. Just some of them. A mixture of bright and darker throw pillows will have the same effect on a room as only bright throw pillows. The only thing we don’t want to do is fill our home with only dark accents. Even with a light color wall, only dark accents can begin to make the room feel small.
If you live in a home where class tends to get broken there are fake class options that look just as good. These tend to made of plastic, but a high-quality plastic that will be hard to tell the difference. So, don’t think just because you have little people around your house you can’t use these decoration ideas.
Glass gives the effect of a room being bigger for many reasons. One has to do with the fact that the piece of furniture itself looks smaller. Glass also allows the light to pass through a room more easily. The more light in a room, the bigger it appears.
Also consider adding some kind of mirror details to the room as well. Mirrors allow for light to bounce around a room and give light to darker corners. It makes the room feel bright and more welcoming. Mirrors can be added in many forms. If you don’t like the idea of hanging an actual mirror on your wall consider some of the new mirrored decor pieces.
This should go without saying, but if your room is cluttered with furniture nothing you do will ever make it feel big enough. Instead of using large pieces, or too many pieces, consider downsizing. Instead of a sectional couch, opt for a small three person couch and a large chair.
This can also be applied to all rooms in the house. Why not downsize to one dresser instead of two? Or mount your television instead of having a large entertainment center. Any piece of furniture that seems too big and in the way should go. Your space will thank you immediately.
Darking lighting is the biggest over look when people start thinking about how to make their home look bigger. Dark spaces look smaller by nature. Sometimes all that needs to be done is change out the light bulbs for a brighter wattage.
You can also add light to a space. There are many options for stylish lighting that will look more like a decor piece instead of a lamp hidden off in the corner. Bright light can transform a place with just a few steps.
All of these decoration ideas are fairly simple and can be applied to a space in the span of one weekend. They will make your home feel bigger and more inviting.
