Everything parent knows days out with children are never a walk in the park (unless they are literally a walk in the park). They complain, and never want to do what we want to do. Not to mention if they are little ones then you have to work around their feeding schedule. Taking children out of the house for any amount of time can just be a day of stress. But it doesn’t have to be.
Armed with the right supplies days out with children can go from stressful to just slightly annoying (I can’t stop the complaining. I am sorry moms). Most of the times our kids usually have one very specific need or want and we just didn’t properly prepare for it. Even parents forget things behind when they are rushing out of the house.
After many attempts at trying to leave my own house, I have come up with my own list of things that have to come with us. These are the things that my son ask for the most, and if I bring them our day goes a lot smoother. As long as I prepare myself mentally for at least two bathroom breaks every hour I can make it through the day without pulling hair out. Hopefully sharing this list with you will make your life easier as well.
Accidents are bound to happen. Even if it’s not this time, it will eventually be that time. I always pack an extra pair of clothes on days out with children. My son is very messy and if we have a last minute change of plans I want to be prepared to see anyone. Spills happen. That is just a fact of life.
Also if doesn’t matter if your child is potty trained or still in diapers. Potty related accidents are too common not to be prepared. Always better safe than sorry. It might even be a good idea to just leave a change of clothes in the car just in case you forget one day.
My son doesn’t ask for his toy a lot when we are out, but just in case I don’t want to be caught without it. That happened one time and the meltdown was impossible to stop. Your kid every through a fit so bad that it just had to run its course? Well if you have then you know how important it is to be prepared. Don’t leave the house without that toy. And if I was you Id buy extra just in case it gets lost.
This is the one I forget the most. There is nothing like starting out for the day and having your child ask for something to drink just to remember you forgot that travel safe cup. Water takes forever to dry off of the floor of a car. And then it smells for weeks. I can only imagine what it is like for those who don’t give water. Do yourself a favor and don’t forget the darn cup.
Kids are always growing. Growing kids means burning energy. Burning energy means hunger. Don’t forget that snack. Something safe for the car is probably best, but if it comes to car safe or child approve, you might want to side with the child. Cars can always be cleaned (well usually).
This one really depends on how long you plan on being out. If its more than a few hours, take the blanket. It makes it easier for them to take a nap on the go. Naps are very important and it might be hard to work around them. Not all kids can nap on the go, but it never hurts to try.
Days out with children doesn’t have to be as hard as we make them. Having a simple checklist of things to remember before we leave the house can make our lives as parents a lot easier.
