Every writer wants to know how to improve their writing skills. We have all been there before. After taking what feels like forever to write an article and then proofreading it, someone comes along and finds a few mistakes. I am sure you’ve found a few in this post already.
The truth is we are only human. We might have been born to write, but we were born with perfect writing skills. Now everyone is looking for some magic on how to improve their skills quickly, but I am here to tell you that won’t happen. The only way to improve is to work out it.
The following are my best tips on how to improve your writing skills and become a better writer.
Write every day.
This can be accomplished many ways. You can journal like most people, or start a blog. Now I wrote a post about how to make money with a blog that you might find interesting if you go this route.
It doesn’t matter how you go about writing every day, just that you do it. The only way to improve is to practice. What is that old saying? Practice makes perfect. Well, it is true. If you don’t write, you’ll ever get better.
Install an editor.
I use Grammarly. This is one of the best ways to improve your writing. It doesn’t just fix your mistakes but points out what they are so you can learn from them. Once you install it into your browser it will attach itself to any text form you use. I highly recommend grabbing it today. Did I mention it is free?
Have friends read over your work.
This one works well because good friends will be honest. You also care about what they think so you’ll work harder when there is pressure that they’ll be reading it. I have a few good friends that still message me when they spot some mistakes on my post. Friends that proofread together stay together.
Take a writing course.
I haven’t done this one, but I know some people that have. Writing courses can not only teach you how to improve your writing skills, but they can also teach you how to appeal to different audiences.
They are also good if you need to know how to write in different formats. I have a degree in English Literature and I barely know how to write in all the different formats that are available. If you plan on selling your work this is a good skill to have.
Use a thesaurus.
No one likes reading anything that continues to use the same words over and over again. Thesauruses are fairly cheap these days. Take in upon yourself and invest in one. If nothing else is it will make your readers happier.
Well, there you have it. Super short, and super basic tips on how to improve your writing skills. Tell me about some of the things you have used in the past to improve your writing skills.
