So you’ve decided. You are a writer, and now you’re working on some masterpiece. Everything is coming along nicely, but you’re starting to feel more like you want to lie in bed and less like you want to write. Why is staying motivated so hard? You might be asking yourself how do you go about staying motivated? Don’t worry I got you covered. The following are my top five tips on how to stay motivated (I bet you haven’t tried them all!).
- Get up early!
Now I am not saying you need to get up before the sun or anything like that. I know many writers fall into the lazy stage. They tend to sleep in late, because hey why not? It isn’t like I have a deadline or anything. Well, that is where you are wrong. You do kind of have a deadline. It would be nice to have whatever it is you’re working on done someday. If you keep sleeping in and not working that day will never come. Start small. Try waking up just a little bit earlier than usual and take that time to work on your writing.
- Take breaks!
This one is the most important. I find that when I write all day, only take very small breaks, I get burned out really fast. Once I’m burned out I don’t write for weeks. Don’t do this to yourself. Instead set a limit on how long you will write and then stop. I limit myself to 2,000 words a day. It takes me about an hour, and I don’t feel tired or bored after. I usually feel excited to continue the story, but I make myself wait until the next day. Find your limit and stick with it.
- Write down ideas!
You can’t be in front of your writings all the time. Sometimes we get ideas on how to continue the story when we are away. Write them down! Some might actually be good ideas. Notice I said some. Some of those ideas will totally stink, but that’s okay. Writing down the ideas will keep you interested in the story you are writing.
- Remember why you started!
We all started writing for a reason. Some of us do it for enjoyment, and some of us wish to make a living off of it. It is important to remind yourself why you started writing in the first place. I write down the reason I started writing and have it posted in places I see it every morning. This makes sure I stay motivated. I have a reason.
- Envision your goal!
We all need goals. They give us something to reach for. What is your goal for writing? It is important to remember this goal. Your goal is different from why you started writing. I started writing because I love it. I am a good writer. My goal for writing is to be able to support myself doing what I love. I am not happy if I am no writing. Goals are very important in staying motivated.
So there you have it. A short post on how to stay motivated. Seems simple enough right? What are some ways you have stayed motivated in the past? What works best for you?
